This bold, sculptural floor lamp by MSLC (Mutual Sunset Lamp Co.) is a true statement piece that will meld well with a variety of interior design schemes, such as postmodernism, brutalism, industrial chic, and any variation thereof that needs a pop of color with vintage whimsy. Crafted out of a ribbed, cylindrical column of corrugated metal, this lamp is a great example of industrial decor, which often incorporates raw, rugged materials to create something both useful & beautiful. Its finish is made to look like several layers of hand-brushed paint in vibrant shades of vermilion with subtle flashes of metallic gold & silver shining through. These layers of paint achieve a rustic charm that provides warmth and balance, offsetting the coolness and rigidity of its otherwise utilitariarian aesthetic. Its sturdy base grounds the piece both visually and physically with a cast iron substrate, keeping it safely weighted and standing straight. Topping it off is a dramatic & angular black shade reflective of its postmodern origins with a glowing gold interior. This contrast between the dark exterior of the shade and the luminous interior is especially striking and warm when lit. It’s topped with a playful spherical finial featuring all of the colors in the lamp’s column. This lamp is in excellent condition with only a few small marks on the lamp’s shade.
MSLC formed from a merger in 1924 in NYC and their designer lamps contributed greatly to American modernism in lighting, and later laid the groundwork for the highly regarded Laurel Lamp Co. This lamp appears to be the only one of its kind according to AI!
