Antique Victorian stationery/writing box, likely dating to the late 19th century, circa 1870s–1890s. This beautiful piece features a black lacquered exterior accented with hand-painted and gilt decoration, including an ornate central medallion. Fine gilt borders and decorative corner motifs frame the lid, giving the otherwise understated black exterior an especially elegant look. Opening the box reveals a wonderful fitted interior. The interior includes multiple compartments for organizing stationery, writing implements, and other small necessities, as well as a long removable compartment with its original gold scrollwork decoration. A large hinged interior panel opens to reveal additional storage beneath, making this a particularly functional example of a Victorian writing box. One of the most beautiful details is the original purple velvet lining on the interior panels. The velvet has an embossed floral design around its perimeter. Structurally, the box remains in great antique condition, with its compartments, hinged panels, and removable pieces intact. Given the age of the piece, there is expected cosmetic wear throughout. The velvet shows fading, thinning, discoloration, small areas of loss, and fraying along portions of the edges, while some of the exterior painted and gilt decoration has faded or worn away over time. There are also scattered surface marks and signs of use to the black finish. Rather than detracting from the piece, the wear gives it a wonderfully authentic, timeworn character and speaks to more than a century of history!
