I bought this from a woman in Durham, NC who was downsizing. She had this custom-built in the 1970s by a woodworking shop that was based out of Chapel Hill, NC. I am not positive which species of wood this is, but my guess is that it’s local to this area, given that it was crafted here in North Carolina. The table is approximately 9 ft long, and it is 15.5” tall. The table is in great condition. There are some surface scratches on the top, but only to a minimal degree commensurate with its age and use as a coffee table. The base is connected to the table top with rebar; this is only apparent, or visible, if looking underneath the top. The base is also a massive, single piece of beautifully and naturally twisted solid wood. The top features natural openings and recesses, augmenting the singular and natural beauty of the table.
