Mid Century Heywood Wakefield Hutch • 1945
Mid-century Heywood Wakefield hutch with its original, signature “platinum” finish. Given their distinct blonde finish, these pieces are highly sought after to match or complete a set. (It’s worth noting here that we have the table and six chairs too; the tables extends from a two-seater to a 12-seater with two leaves). The top of the hutch has two glass doors that slide in tracks in front of six spacious shelves, which are adjustable. The shelves have grooves for displaying plates standing up. The bottom of the hutch has more than ample space for storage with four large, deep drawers, the top of which spans the entire length of the buffet, and two roomy cabinets, each with their own shelf inside. The top drawer has the makers mark. The back of the top has several marks (most are photographed) including the date it was manufactured - in 1945! - placing this piece on the cusp of both art deco and mid century design. Its rounded edges, waterfall drawer pulls and chunky, square door knobs are all reminiscent of the art deco era, while its minimal, mostly unadorned design and straight lines all point toward the “modern” era of mid century design. It’s a stunning display of the best of both worlds.
Although, it was manufactured in 1945, this was purchased ten years later in 1955. Here is more info from the original owners:
“It appears to have have been built in 1945 the year WWII ended, but marketing didn’t begin with supply chains for a few years after that.
Dad was at the Pentagon in DC when mom bought the furniture around 1955 when I was born at Fort Belvoir, Virginia it was put in storage in the late 50s early 60s while we were in South Korea and then it went to Belleville Illinois, then to Dover, Delaware while dad was flying to Vietnam and then back to Oxford, Ohio his last year in ROTC at Miami University and then to Fayetteville, North Carolina and then Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and then Croasdaile Village for the last 20 years.
The furniture just had a good life, hope it still has more years.”
The hutch is in great shape for its age (and all of those moves across the country!!). This was a beloved piece of furniture. I photographed all of its issues: a chip in the wood at the base on the left side; and some tiny, minor scratches to the finish on one drawer handle and on the top’s right edge. It still has all of it’s original hardware. The drawers are all in great shape - they have evidence of use inside - but they all slide well and open and close with ease. See the 12th, 13th & 14th photos for close-ups of the flaws.
