Mid Century Nils Jonsson for Troeds “Arild” Teak Credenza • Sweden
Mid century “Arild” credenza made in Sweden and designed by Nils Jonsson for Troeds, circa 1965. Fully restored and refinished by a group of local professionals in Durham & Raleigh, North Carolina, myself included, having fully refinished this piece. This credenza was found in lamentable condition, standing up lengthwise on one side, missing one half of its leg structure and one of its sliding doors. I had the missing leg and door rebuilt, exactly replicating its originals, and then I personally refinished the rest of this piece in its entirety. Destined for the landfill, this stunning example of Scandinavian design was more than worth the work and tender loving care it took to give it another life.
From the internet: Like many Scandinavian designers active in the 1950s and 1960s, there is a scarcity of verifiable biographical information available on the Swedish designer Nils Jonsson. Designing in the same period as mid-century modern heavyweights like Hans Wegner, Arne Jacobsen and Verner Panton, many Danish and Swedish cabinetmakers did not garner the same attention as their contemporaries who concentrated on seating and lighting. Creating mostly secretaires , tables , and sideboards , Nils Jonsson’s contribution to Scandinavian modern design has not been forgotten, due to the fastidious labeling of his products which allow for easy identification and the healthy appetite of vintage lovers for Jonsson's sleek, high-quality designs.
During the 1950s, Jonsson’s designs were produced by Tørring Møbelfabrik in Denmark. In the 1960s, Jonsson’s most productive period, his designs were produced by the Swedish company Troeds Bjärnum. Established in 1934 by Svea and Hugo Troedsson, Troeds produced pieces in typical Scandinavian modern style. Jonsson worked alongside the well-respected designer Yngve Ekström, whose work was also produced by Troeds.
Some minor imperfections remain: one cabinet shelf is missing, but the original hardware remains, so I had a piece of wood cut to replace this shelf - but you could have the remaining shelf replicated. There is a faint, cloudy water stain on the top, barely visible (see photos); three miniscule chips to the veneer along the sides’ bottom edges - two on the right side, one on the left. All barely visible & nothing structurally problematic.
Height 30.5” Length 75” Depth 17”
