LOCAL PICKUP ONLY
This striking and rare 1980’s Memphis-style banker’s lamp, designed by Robert Sonneman for George Kovacs, is a bold statement with its playful shape and vibrant color blocking. Its sculptural form features a glossy red stepped base with a matching red vented shade, paired with cylindrical aqua-green columns capped in bright yellow accents. A black perforated metal panel supports thick, rounded glass extensions on each side, creating a sleek silhouette. The lamp has been rewired and fitted with a new LED bulb.
Great condition. Minor chips and bubbling to the paint throughout.
Now, on to some cool history behind the lamp!
The Memphis design movement, founded in 1981 by Ettore Sottsass and a group of Milanese designers, was named after Bob Dylan’s song “Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again,” which played during their first meeting. A rebellion against the quiet minimalism of the 1970’s, Memphis style embraced vibrant colors, graphic shapes, and unexpected materials, celebrating design as playful and expressive rather than purely functional. This lamp perfectly channels that spirit, making it not only a source of light but a collectible piece of postmodern history!
