VTG Senior Cords • Purdue University 1959
Vintage senior cords dated 1959 from Purdue University, hand drawn on a vintage pair of Geisler’s corduroy pants. Loaded with character & sentiment, the drawings and paint feature a delightful, custom collection of personal anecdotes and characters - including a charming little red sports car, a Mickey Mouse “Musketeers” medallion, and, most importantly, the university’s own Purdue Pete with his signature hat and barbell. Given these feature Purdue Pete, it’s more than likely that these senior cords belonged to a Purdue graduate, and Purdue University is where this very trend of senior cords began. Much like walking yearbooks, these pants were a right of passage for seniors , and beginning in 1904 at Purdue university, they gained extreme popularity in the 40’s & 50’s, sparking a trend across high schools and colleges throughout America well into the 1970’s. With over a dozen hand painted designs, these pants clearly have a lot of love put into them, and, again, are actually from a Purdue graduate. These are such a joy to peruse, given all of the clues into the owner’s background, like the WV “mountaineer” medallion and the greek letters. It seems one is for Pi Tau Sigma, an international honor society for mechanical engineering, and another is Pi Lambda Phi, a Yale fraternity. Perhaps this individual was from WV, studied enginerring at Purdue and was destined for Yale. It’s easy to see why these were such a hot trend, and why some people carry on this tradition still today.
These pants are high waisted (9” zipper!), pleated at the waist, and feature deep, cotton lined pockets (and one tiny pocket on the front, left side). They are in great condition with normal wear - spots throughout, some paint stains, wear to the seat of the pants, and one slightly disconnected belt loop. Cuffs are stitched.
Measurements (taken flat and doubled at the waist and hips): 30” waist, 42” hip, 28” thigh opening, 29.5” inseam.
All sales final: It is our mission to disclose all issues found, but all of our items are vintage - which means most of them have been worn or used and may have minor issues. In the event that we have overlooked an issue, it is not because we misrepresented the item, it is because the issue was not apparent enough to demand our attention. We can only apologize for our oversight and hope you can either repair the issue or resell the item, but we do not accept returns for items we have photographed & listed on our website.
